New 250mW Laser Diode Offers 6x Recording For Blu-ray

Sharp announced plans to start volume production of a High-Power Blue-Violet Laser Diode for Blu-Ray recorders powerful enough to burn dual layer Blu-ray Discs at the 6x speed.

Sharp wil lstart production of two variations of the new diode in April. The GH04P25A4G features a proprietary facet structure and its ultra compact dimensions (3.3mm diameter) make it suitable for use in notebook BD drives. The other model (GH04P25A2G) fatures a diameter of 5.6mm and can be installed in desktop BD drives.

The supported power output of 240 mW makes possible high-speed 6X recording on dual-layer Blu-ray Discs (BD). The power consumption of the laser chip was decreased, and mounting on 3.3mm diameter package was enabled by suppressing the rise in heat of the package, according to Sharp.

Sharp will start mass production of the new diodes on April, priced at 50,000 yen.

Since beginning mass production of the industry's first infrared laser diode for use in CD players in 1982, Sharp has been an industry leader in this field. Now, based on proprietary technologies and know-how nurtured over long years of involvement in this area, Sharp has succeeded in moving high-power blue-violet laser diodes, the key device in next-generation DVD recorders, into volume production (capacity 700,000 units/month).

The japanese company is also working on new laser diode prototypes that are expected to further speed-up the dual-layer recording speed of next generation media. The next product aims at a maximum output of 350mW that will support 8-12X recording in two layers. Note that 8x recording on two-layers requires a power of 230-280mW. The 12x burning speed is the physical limit of recording in the next-generation media. These new developments are expected to be available during 2008 and 2009.

LTH BD-R from Mitsubishi and TY

As many of you might know Maxell, TY and Mitsubishi all have announced LTH BD-R some weeks ago. The LTH BD-R is based on an organic dye. This should cut down costs of production for BD-R media.

TY and Mitsubishi BD-R are now available in stores across Japan and YSS already bought some TY and Mitsubishi LTH BD-R discs.

The manufacturer for both brands is TY and the MID is TYG-BD Y01.

The Maxell Discs are not available at the moment.

Since these are made with a organic dye not all BD burners and drives can read them. According to YSS the PS3 for example can not read LTH BD-R discs and LG GGW-H20N is not able to burn but read these. Hopefully this will change with future firmware updates.

Panasonic LF-PB271JD Blu-ray Drive First to Support LTH Media

Panasonic released a new firmware for its LF-PB271JD Blu-ray drive, adding support for the new LTH Blu-ray disc.

The Japanese company is the first ODD manufacturer to offer such an update. The firmware Ver1.01 adds 4x reading/writing support for LTH BD-R discs to Panasonic's LF-PB271JD internal Blu-ray burner. Panasonic will also release a firmware upgrade for its 2x BD burner, the LF-MB121JD, later this year.

The LTH write-once BD-R media feature an organic dye recording layer, making them different that the currently available BD-R discs that use inorganic materials. In LTH BD-R media, the reflectivity of the organic dye recording layer increases (High) after recording.

The advantages of the LTH manufacturing technology is that it can be applied without requiring large-scale manufacturing plant investments, allowing for using modified CD-R and DVD-R manufacturing equipment. The Blu-ray backers believe that this advantage will allow disc makers to increase their production easier, helping the penetration of the Blu-ray format on the PC segment.

Mitsubishi Chemical Media and Taiyo Yuden have already announced the availability of first LTH BD-Rs in Japan.

"Low to High" technology (LTH) was included in the "Blu-ray Disc Recordable Format Ver.1.2" specifications.

Pioneer is also expected to offer such firmware updates for some of its existing Blu-ray drives.

LDC= Long Distance Code
BIS= Burst Indicator Subcode

Posted Image

Posted Image

Write Quality Testing:

The DH-4O1S is one of the first drives capable of performing write quality testing with Blu-ray Disc media. When

combined with CD Speed, the drive is able to report the Long Distance Code (LDC) and Burst Indicator Subcode (BIS).

While it's still too early to know what "good" results should look like, c't magazine has stated that the average

LDC should stay below 13 and the maximum BIS should not exceed 8. In my own testing, I've found that the LDC reported by CD

Speed is considerably higher than 13.

I should also point out that the latest version of CD Speed still has some nagging issues when performing write quality

tests on the DH-4O1S. In particular, the software would hang at the 99% mark when testing Blu-ray Discs.

Unlike current BD-R discs, in which the inorganic recording layer is made by the sputtering process, the organic recording layer for BD-R LTH TYPE media can be applied using the same dye spin coating process as CD-R or DVD-R media.  As a result, Verbatim will be able to begin mass production of its BD-R LTH TYPE by only slightly modifying existing CD-R or DVD-R production lines and by adding the cover layer coating process with super hard coat feature. With the investment in BD-R LTH TYPE production less than current BD-R production, Verbatim expects many CD/DVD manufacturers will be joining the BD world.

http://www.verbatim....FBD6D62D79D9847
